On her debut EP, Hatchie, the Brisbane singer and bassist born Harriette Pilbeam, strums and croons across five dreamy, reverb-drenched indie-pop songs—emphasis on “pop.” “Sure” and the title track are filled with layered vocals and sharp hooks, like a sweetened blend of The Sundays and Cocteau Twins (fun fact: CT's Robin Guthrie is a professed Hatchie fan). Her skill at bridging stargazers and shoegazers extends to “Bad Guy” and “Try,” the latter of which takes a traditional love song and encases it in a delicate crystal shell. For mainstream alt-rock fans, <i>Sugar & Spice</i> is like a gateway drug into the glorious world of dream pop.
