Peppered with stories that are as revealing as the songs themselves, the intimate <i>Sugar Mountain</i> captures Neil Young coming into his own as a solo artist. With just an acoustic guitar, the singer/songwriter radically reworks Buffalo Springfield's “Mr. Soul” as a slow, meditative number and showcases his aching quiver on “Expecting to Fly.” He also unveils several future classics, including an earthy, plainspoken version of the breakup ballad “Birds.”
