About
Seattle's Sir Mix-a-Lot aligned with the locomotive bass of his diagonal coastal counterpart Miami and speed-rapped his way to public consciousness on his debut, SWASS. The album hit a saturated rap market with a force that made rappers from both coasts look in a northwesterly direction. His songs have an advanced degree of humor and storytelling. He raps about buttermilk biscuits, beepers, and firearms (he's an active gun owner, the rap-world equivalent of Ted Nugent). He sped up the voice of partner Kid Sensation on "Square Dance Rap" and "Rippin," rendering both delightfully cartoonish yet fully slamming. "Posse on Broadway"-a slow-rolling pimp stroll through his Seattle neighborhood-is familiar to any self-respecting '80s rap fanatic before "Baby Got Back" shot him into the stratosphere.
