About

Sympathetic Resonance is a collaborative studio album by singer John Arch and guitarist Jim Matheos (credited as Arch/Matheos), released on September 13, 2011 through Metal Blade Records. Matheos has played for progressive metal band Fates Warning since its formation in 1983, whilst Arch left the band in 1987 after having served as lead vocalist on their first three albums. Both musicians had previously reunited on Arch's 2003 EP A Twist of Fate. Matheos had contacted Arch about re-emerging from retirement after the first few songs were written for a new Fates Warning album. Upon Matheos' realization that the next Fates Warning album would be delayed for several years, he opted to record the music with Arch as part of a new album. The three songs initially intended for Fates Warning which ultimately appeared on Sympathetic Resonance were "Neurotically Wired", "Midnight Serenade" and "Stained Glass Sky". Allmusic Review by Christian Genzel: The Arch/Matheos project is a reunion of Fates Warning founders Jim Matheos and John Arch, who parted ways in 1987 when vocalist Arch left the group after its third album, Awaken the Guardian. Matheos' appearance on Arch's 2003 EP Twist of Fate was the first indication of a new collaboration, but it took them until 2011 to finally release an entire album. Together with other Fates Warning musicians -- current bassist Joey Vera, former guitarist Frank Aresti, and current live drummer Bobby Jarzombek -- the duo recorded Sympathetic Resonance as a 54-minute prog metal album that is not a continuation of the 25-year-old Awaken the Guardian, but rather shows how Fates Warning might sound today if Arch had stayed with the band.
