About

This is Hancock’s debut album, originally released in May 1962 about a year before he joined Miles Davis’s “second great quintet” with its rhythm section of Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and the young drummer Tony Williams. The pianist composed all the tracks on this LP, including his Watermelon Man, which became a pop hit for the Afro-Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria.
