Produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, the fourth album from Kentucky rockers Cage the Elephant plays like a love letter to the late '60s, mixing scuzzy textures with pretty hooks and Stooges-level sleaze with Beatles-level poise. Less edgy but more darkly introspective than their early work, <i>Pretty</i> turns the band’s outward aggression in, spinning bleak stories about domestic violence (“Punchin’ Bag”) and missing people (“Sweetie Little Jean”) through the frayed, frail, and ferocious vocals of Matt Shultz.
