About
The Polyphonic Spree is too conceptually expansive to be labeled merely a band, yet more artistically ambitious than your average religious cult—which, with some two dozen-plus robe-wearing members, is what the Dallas-based aggregation most closely resembles. The Polyphonic Spree seems more like the cast of some lost, late-’60s rock opera. Led in every sense of the word by former Tripping Daisy mainstay Tim DeLaughter, PS on its 2003 debut imagines what Up With People might have sounded like under the guidance of Smile-era Brian Wilson. It’s essentially a one-joke concept extended to 10 full “stages” here, but executed on emblematic standouts like “It’s the Sun” and “Soldier Girl” with such an exuberant charm and overwhelming sense of scale as to be irresistible.
