The sexy, saturnine Canadian singer/songwriter chose the dozen songs on this 1975 collection himself, from his first four albums. The inclusion of his poetic breakout, "Suzanne," the oft-covered, Southern-hued "Bird on the Wire," and the dramatic love triangle chronicled in "Famous Blue Raincoat" are expected. But Cohen throws curveballs with the dense and allusive "Last Year's Man" and the atmospheric French Resistance anthem "The Partisan."
