In the intricate tapestry of punk rock history, Black Flag's 1982 demos stand as a significant artifact. The period leading up to these recordings saw Black Flag in a state of flux. Hindered by a protracted legal battle with Unicorn Records, they were essentially barred from releasing new material, but this didn't halt their creative momentum. The demos, which would later serve as precursors to their seminal "My War" album, capture Black Flag in a transitional phase. The inclusion of Henry Rollins, who had joined the band in 1981, brought a fresh dynamic and intensity to the group. His raw, visceral vocal style would become a defining element of Black Flag's evolving sound.
