About
The debut release of the David Grisman Quintet, issued in 1977, set the foundation for the particular combination of bluegrass, jazz, gypsy music combined with a bit of post-hippie weirdness that has come to be known as Dawg Music. (Dawg was the nickname Jerry Garcia tagged Grisman with when they played straight-ahead bluegrass together in Old and In the Way) The band consisted of the leader on mandolin, Tony Rice on guitar, Darol Anger on violin, Todd Phillips (later an accomplished bassist in Tony Rice's band among others) on second mandolin and Bill Amanteek on bass. Grisman arranged for the members of the band to study intensively with Bay-area jazz guitarist John Carlini as the band was developing its repertoire in preparation for the recording of the album.
