Collected from a 10-year period, the rarities and outtakes on this compelling compilation show Sonic Youth’s productivity and the clarity of their artistic vision in a wide variety of contexts. The electronic burbling of “Campfire” and the slide from ambient beauty to atonal menace in “Loop Cat” demonstrate the band’s constant eagerness to remake and remodel their sound. Conversely, “The Diamond Sea”—a track from <i>Washing Machine</i> presented here in its uncut 26-minute version—is Sonic Youth at their most gloriously epic.
