Living Sacrifice remain one of the most angry-sounding Christian metal bands in existence. “Overkill Exposure” detonates with volatile brutality as a cavalcade of drums come galloping in like the hooves of the apocalypse’s horsemen. Many of the lyrical themes in “Overkill Exposure” revolve around the imagery described in the <i>Book of Revelation</i>, while “Rules of Engagement” (featuring guest vocals by David Bunton of the Showdown) erupts with similarly foreboding verses describing the end of days: “Bloody mess, stench of death/ Blood and sweat mixed with earth/ Searing flesh is what you’re worth.” There’s a little less fire-and-brimstone fueled pulpit-pounding on the seething “Nietzsche’s Madness,” as frontman Bruce Fitzhugh shreds his larynx railing against atheism. He similarly lambasts scientific technology aiding social Darwinism on the dark and brooding “Unfit to Live.” Some more melodious moments seep in to “Love Forgives” and “God Is My Home,” which unfolds a narrative similar to that of the Prodigal Son. The epic “Apostasy” bookends the album with frantic rhythms and triumphant guitarmonies.
