About
The Legendary A&M Sessions is an extended play featuring five songs by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, recorded early in their career for their original record label A&M Records. The EP was released by the company in 1984 after Captain Beefheart had gone into retirement The EP is compiled from two singles originally released through A&M in 1966. The first of these paired the Bo Diddley cover "Diddy Wah Diddy" with a track written by Don Van Vliet (Beefheart) called "Who Do You Think You're Fooling?". The second, "Moonchild", was written by producer David Gates (later of the band Bread), and was backed with Van Vliet's "Frying Pan". The fifth song, "Here I Am I Always Am", was a rejected B-side which was initially planned as the B Side of "Moonchild" (and appears as such on a test pressing) but was passed over in favor of "Frying Pan". It was first officially released on this EP.

This release pulls together two previously released [A&M Records] 7" singles by the band, A & B-sides as listed, respectively. On the 1984 issues the 5th track is the 1st official release of the work. Recordings are Mono. The vinyl is 12" 45rpm.
Subsequent issues [i.e. 1986] employ liner notes 'lifted' from 1st issue - therefore, this track would have been previously released officially. Also, the comment "...today, some eighteen years later..." would, of course, be incorrect per reissue.
Mastering is credited on releases to Carbone at A&M Mastering Studios in Hollywood, although the vinyl is clearly cut by mastering engineers in the UK, as evidenced in run-outs.
First vinyl issues have red marble covers, later issues have blue checker effect. Given the qualities of the different 'cuts' between the two releases, there must be some conjecture [to date] as to the mastering engineer for CD issues.
History, through published band-member recollections, has revealed that Alex St. Clair [Snouffer] was drummer on the first A-side (due to the Armed-Forces call-up of drummer Mortensen). Rich Hepner was the guitarist, as per the 12th Nov '65 line-up of the band at Exposition Hall. P.G. Blakely (aka Blakeley in DB) was back in the band after the recording, appearing in the A-side performance on American TV. PR photos of this line-up then appeared.
