Rod Stewart’s solo dominance of the rock landscape began in the early ‘70s and lasted for decades, with his raspy voice and regular-guy swagger adding soul and sexiness to story songs and come-ons alike. This expansive collection of outtakes and rarities from Stewart’s most prolific period opens with a gentler, more vulnerable version of “Maggie May” and dives even deeper, with covers of the Aussie rock chestnut “In a Broken Dream” and Buddy Holly’s “Maybe Baby” rounding out the workshopping of his biggest hits.
