After four albums of increasingly pop leanings, Macy Gray returns to her groovy, off-kilter soul roots with gusto. “That Man” cossets a doo-wop sway and bluesy riffs beneath Gray’s barnstorming vocals, while the title track weaves together jangling guitars and rollicking, gospel-inspired handclaps. It’s not all soul, though: “Kissed It” is pure rock, backed up by special guests Velvet Revolver, while “Lately” is all twinkling ’70s disco.
