About

Following two EPs, Felt's first full album was The Strange Idols Pattern and Other Short Stories. Coming off of the relatively lo-fi Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty and the mostly instrumental The Splendour of Fear, this record finds the band fully defining their sound. With renowned pop-savvy producer John Leckie aboard, the album brings a new level of sonic clarity and depth to the group's fragile, jangly vision. Lawrence's languorous vocal inflections split the difference between folk rock and postpunk, but Maurice Deebank's guitar arpeggios add a consistent pastoral touch, especially when they're pushed to the forefront on instrumentals like "Index" and "Sempiternal Darkness." This particular package pairs Strange Idols with its follow-up, Ignite the Seven Cannons, which was produced by Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie and unsurprisingly bears a gauzier sound, with Martin Duffy's organ taking greater prominence. The other Twin, Elizabeth Fraser, lends her distinctive voice to "Primitive Painters," which became one of Felt's most popular tracks.
