About

This Toilet Earth is the fourth studio album by the American heavy metal band GWAR. Released on March 29, 1994, through Metal Blade Records, the album marked a significant departure from the band's previous work, showcasing a more melodic and experimental sound. This Toilet Earth delved into darker and more introspective themes, while still maintaining GWAR's signature shock value and comedic elements. The album received mixed reviews from critics but remains a notable entry in GWAR's discography. This Toilet Earth saw GWAR exploring a more melodic and experimental musical direction compared to their previous albums. The band incorporated elements of alternative metal, industrial rock, and even hints of punk rock into their sound. The album featured a greater emphasis on melodic hooks, cleaner guitar tones, and a broader range of vocal styles from Oderus Urungus. Despite the musical departure, GWAR's satirical and humorous lyrics were still present, albeit with a darker and more introspective tone. This Toilet Earth delved into themes such as existentialism, nihilism, and the inherent absurdity of human existence. After a period of intense touring and relentless live performances, GWAR entered the studio in 1993 to record This Toilet Earth. The album was recorded at Master Control Studios in Burbank, California, and produced by Glen Robinson, who had previously worked with bands such as Voivod and Annihilator. This Toilet Earth featured the core lineup of GWAR, including lead vocalist Oderus Urungus (Dave Brockie), guitarist Balsac the Jaws of Death (Mike Derks), bassist Beefcake the Mighty (Michael Bishop), drummer Jizmak Da Gusha (Brad Roberts), and guitarist Flattus Maximus (Pete Lee). The album's cover artwork, created by artist Mark Nagata, depicted GWAR's members in a grotesque and detailed illustration. The artwork showcased the band's iconic costumes and elaborate stage personas, emphasizing their distinctive visual aesthetic. The CD and LP versions of the album included additional artwork, lyrics, and credits, providing fans with an immersive experience into GWAR's universe. "Saddam a Go-Go" is one of the standout tracks on This Toilet Earth. The song features a catchy chorus, infectious guitar riffs, and showcases GWAR's ability to blend heavy music with dark humor and biting social commentary. Another notable track is "Pee in the Shower," which exemplifies the album's more melodic and experimental sound, with its atmospheric guitar work and introspective lyrics. This Toilet Earth received mixed reviews from critics, with some appreciating the band's musical experimentation and darker themes, while others felt it strayed too far from GWAR's established sound. Commercially, the album did not achieve the same level of success as some of GWAR's earlier releases. However, it remains a notable entry in their discography, showcasing their willingness to explore new musical territories and delve into deeper thematic content.
