Producer and singer/songwriter Mikky Ekko exemplifies the genre-bending nature of contemporary electronic pop, and his debut album <i>Time</i> is as audacious as it is catchy. Despite having worked with both Rihanna and members of TV on the Radio, Ekko is not quite an indie rocker <i>or</i> an R&B crooner. Instead, each track on <i>Time</i> is Ekko’s own unique invention. Offbeat hip-hop rhythms share space with piano-driven power ballads. Classic soul harmonies are swathed in psychedelic effects. Glam rock guitar riffs give way to gospel testifying. A musical omnivore with a killer knack for pop hooks, Ekko has crafted an album that’s both crossover-ready and slyly innovative.
