About

Though Times Have Changed marked The Impressions’ first full-length release after Curtis Mayfield's departure, it couldn't be said to signal a radical change in sound or direction for the vaunted Chicago soul group. Indeed, Times Have Changed is very much a Mayfield-helmed effort. By the time of the record’s release, Mayfield had perfected the densely layered, funk-oriented production style that informed his early solo albums. This style is very much in evidence on Times Have Changed, from the grim, minor-key funk workout of “Stop the War" to the breathlessly openhearted reverie of “Potent Love," which Mayfield would rework as “Love Me (Right in the Pocket)” on 1974’s Got To Find a Way. Though Times Have Changed has never received the same critical accolades as Mayfield’s contemporary solo albums, it nonetheless deserves to be considered alongside those releases. It remains one of the best Impressions efforts of the '70s.
