About
With TURN OFF THE LIGHT—an expanded version of the German pop star’s 2018 EP—Halloween finally gets the album it deserves: a playfully sinister, deliciously bawdy mix of perfect puns (“TRANSylvania),” Auto-Tuned vocals (“Death by Sex”), and menacing club beats (“Boo! Bitch!”). The sharp-witted singer, who famously underwent gender reassignment surgery as a teenager, seems to find relief—and thrill—in the holiday’s campy spirit: “I’m the greatest God created/I’m the sickness, I’m contagious,” she teases on “In the Next Life,” a howling techno-pop cut that could soundtrack a ghost rave. “There is no turning back now/I can’t be saved.”
