About
The sound of the Soft Boys is the sound of ‘80s college rock before its time. With Robyn Hitchcock leading the way and Kimberly Rew (later of Katrina & The Waves) in full support, the Soft Boys recorded one of the finest albums of the new-wave era with their classic album, 1980’s Underwater Moonlight. “I Wanna Destroy You” is a killer anti-war lead-off cut, with a jangle that would soon be co-opted with great effect by R.E.M. This 30th Anniversary Edition adds 30 bonus cuts, including Soft Boy rehearsal tapes that are raw and gritty and filled with fun and purpose. There are other wonderful outtakes such as “Strange” and “Only the Stones Remain.” The basic album is a wonder itself. “I Got The Hots” is a hilarious blues come-on. “Insanely Jealous of You” shows real character as Hitchcock sounds like a rambling psychotic wandering the neighborhood after dark. “Old Pervert” is one tough butcher job as the rhythms turn violent and the guitars get tangled up in chaos.
