About
On her fifth solo album, Alice Coltrane explores her art with creative fearlessness and burning spirituality. Cut after a sojourn to India and Sri Lanka, the music bridges her free-jazz past and cosmic sounds from the East. “Battle at Armageddon” is a dialogue between her spacey Wurlitzer organ improvisations and the surging polymetric energy of drummer Rashied Ali; three tracks, including “Oh Allah,” situate string arrangements by Ornette Coleman in shimmering, sax-like clusters of violin over the breath-like drumming of either Jack DeJohnette or Clifford Jarvis.
