DOMi & JD BECK are known for their dazzling, obsessively manicured mix of jazz, R&B, soft pop, and electronic music—’70s fusion for the TikTok generation. Less guest-heavy but more focused than 2022’s breakout <i>NOT TiGHT</i>, <i>WHO ASKED?</i> is a jewel box of twisty hooks, hairpin rhythmic turns, and layered vocal harmonies, somehow both smooth and hyper-intricate at the same time. Tracks like <b>“PHANTOM THREAD”</b> and <b>“PUZZLE PiECES”</b> show how effective they are when they streamline some of their busyness, while <b>“CONCERTiNO (FOR PiANO, DRUMS & ORCHESTRA)”</b> is a playful exercise in cramming as many ideas into a small, suitelike space as possible. Plenty of listeners might know them through collaborations with neo-fusion artists like Thundercat or Anderson.Paak, but there’s also more than a touch of mid-’60s Beach Boys wonder here, too.
