About

Whiskey Myers pride themselves on making genre-blurring music, so the title of this seventh album from the Texas outfit feels especially fitting, offering an onomatopoeic preview of the 11 tracks to come. Produced by Nashville juggernaut Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Lainey Wilson), Whomp Whack Thunder is more rock album than country, though the sextet’s Texas roots can’t help but shine through. The record opens with “Time Bomb,” a grungy, crunchy rocker that lets lead vocalist Cody Cannon—who can wail with the best of them—really let loose from the get-go. “Tailspin” is similarly rowdy, with sludgy guitar and a swaggering beat that, together, scream Southern rock. “Born to Do” gives the band a chance to show off its softer side, with vocals from Cannon that recall the early work of Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson. Closing track “Monsters” is introspective and encouraging, ending the record with the refrain “So dry your eyes and don’t be afraid.”
