About

Spanning from 1907 through the height of the Cold War, these splendidly remastered recordings of Greek folk music suggest the timeless continuity of Balkan traditions. Many of these sounds are clearly those of a world now vanished, with the oldest cut here, a stark ballad entitled “Golfo,” performed by an unknown villager on the floghera (a bamboo flute popular with Greek shepherds). Yet one can also hear the modern world approaching, with hints of klezmer in Christos Baniakas’ fast-paced “Eseis Padia Vlahopoila” and Dixieland flavor in the positively swinging “Enas Aetos-Tsamiko.”
