The Noisettes are tough to classify. The 10 tunes on <i>Wild Young Hearts</i>, their second release, are an infectious mash-up of disco, funk, R&B, and sharp pop. The London-based trio is led by first-rate singer and bassist Shingai Shoniwa, a diva who knows how to keep her soaring voice in check so that it serves the songs first. Her bandmates are also superb musicians who keep the rhythm front and center, which helps their genre-jumping flow smoothly and naturally from one song to the next. “Never Forget You” is a spectacular slice of string-sweetened neo soul with some old school trappings, “Don’t Upset the Rhythm” is a dance floor anthem, “Sometimes” features jazzy acoustic stylings, and “Beat of My Heart” and the title track are straight-up solid pop. The Noisettes’ ability to nail such diverse styles without lagging speaks volumes about the quality of <i>Wild Young Hearts</i> as well as the band’s huge potential.
