Biography
Abhi Sridharan Vaidehi, better known by his stage name Abhi The Nomad, is an Indian rapper and singer. Vaidehi was born in Madras, India to a diplomat father who was frequently forced to travel. He currently lives in Austin, Texas. Of his heritage, Vaidehi stated in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times “I’m not really complaining — being Indian’s actually almost an advantage... but it’d be cool if a lot of Indians were prominent in hip-hop.

The Suitcase Years
The early EPs were defined by absolute displacement and cheap gear. Recording on whatever USB mic he could carry in a single bag, Abhi built his sound out of sheer necessity while bouncing between New Delhi, California, and France. You can hear the lack of a proper booth in the dry, upfront vocal mix of the 2015 singles. It is frantic, hyper-focused hip-hop made by a guy who did not know what country he would sleep in next month.
The Austin Tommy Boy Signing
Landing in Austin on an temporary visa changed the stakes, leading to the signing with legendary hip-hop imprint Tommy Boy for the release of Marbled. Suddenly, the bedroom setup expanded to include real bass guitars, live keys, and a heavier emphasis on structured indie-rock hooks. He mixed the entire record himself, balancing a cynical critique of the American dream with bright, groove-heavy funk lines. It is the sound of a musician finally getting a foothold, even if the ground beneath him was still shaking.
The Collaborative Pivot
When the pandemic hit and touring stopped, Abhi pivoted to tight, producer-focused collaborative records, starting with Atlanta-based producer Kato on the Abhi Vs Kato EP. This period stripped away the indie-rock pretensions and leaned straight into sharp, boom-bap drums and rapid-fire battle rap. He stopped trying to be a one-man band for a second and let outside beats dictate his flow. - Outkast — Abhi has repeatedly cited the Atlanta duo as his benchmark for vocal interplay and genre-bending production. You hear Big Boi's fast-rap cadence in Abhi's rhythmic pocket and Andre 3000's eccentric melodic shifts throughout the hooks on Marbled. It is the blueprint for keeping hip-hop weird but incredibly funky.
- Kanye West — Abhi pointed directly to the soul-sampling, self-produced era of West as the reason he started making his own beats. The pitched-up vocal chops and thick, driving kick drums on early tracks like 'Underdog' are straight out of the Late Registration playbook. He took the lesson that a producer-rapper does not have to compromise on either front.
- Beck — The genre-hopping, slacker-funk ethos of Beck's late-90s work heavily influenced Abhi's approach to acoustic guitars and hip-hop drums. You hear this clearly on the acoustic versions of his catalog, where he strips the hip-hop production down to find a dry, rhythmic folk-rock song underneath. It is the same junk-shop folk aesthetic Beck mastered on Odelay.
- Eminem — The raw, self-deprecating humor and dense internal rhyme schemes of early Slim Shady are a massive part of Abhi's lyrical DNA. On tracks like 'Sexutext', he uses that same rapid-fire, cynical wit to mock his own anxieties and relationship failures. He took the complex multi-syllable rhyming structure but swapped the shock-value horrorcore for modern millennial dread.
- Gorillaz — Damon Albarn's cartoon collective showed Abhi how to seamlessly weld hip-hop, dub, and indie-pop into a single cohesive universe. The post-apocalyptic concept and diverse feature list on Modern Trash are a direct nod to the collaborative, genre-blind structure of Plastic Beach. It is pop music built with a dark, cynical edge.
