1. 01

   Pub Rock To FM Radio

   After Clover dissolved, Lewis assembled the News from rival Bay Area bar bands Soundhole and American Standard. Their self-titled 1980 debut was over-processed by producer Bill Schnee, convincing the band to take absolute control of their own boards. By 1982's Picture This, they dialed in their signature hook-heavy pub rock formula, scoring a massive hit with Do You Believe in Love and setting the template for their arena years.

   The Platinum Machine

   Cutting Sports at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, the band engineered a massive commercial takeover by stripping away new wave gimmickry for muscular, dry pop-rock. Fore! locked in that stadium-level production with chart-topping juggernauts, while their Back to the Future soundtrack placement made them inescapable. The sound was punchy, compressed within an inch of its life, and stacked with five-part vocal harmonies that dominated global airwaves.

   The Roots And Horns Pivot

   Exhausted by the pop treadmill, 1988's Small World brought in Stan Getz and leaned into New Orleans funk and roots reggae, alienating fair-weather pop fans but rescuing their musical integrity. By 1994's Four Chords & Several Years Ago, they abandoned contemporary radio chasing entirely to cut straight covers of Fifties and Sixties R&B. They spent the rest of their run as a dedicated, powerhouse road band, paying direct homage to Memphis and Chicago soul.

Influences

• Tower of Power — Huey Lewis shared Bay Area bills and rehearsal spaces with Tower of Power throughout the 1970s, eventually recruiting the Tower of Power horn section to play on Sports. You hear that brass-heavy, syncopated funk direct on hits like Heart and Soul. That horn punch kept the band from sounding like another sterile synth-rock act.
• Sam & Dave — Lewis spent his formative years obsessing over the Stax-Volt roster, explicitly modeling the News's live two-part vocal interplay and call-and-response dynamics on Stax duos. That grit drives the choruses across their entire catalog, right down to their full-length Stax tribute record Soulsville. It is the soul backbone beneath the pop sheen.
• Thin Lizzy — Huey Lewis played harmonica on Thin Lizzy's 1978 live LP Live and Dangerous and 1979's Black Rose after touring the UK with Phil Lynott. You hear that twin-lead guitar attack in Chris Hayes and Johnny Colla's melodic hooks throughout Fore!. Lynott taught Lewis how to project stadium-sized charisma from a pub-band foundation.
• The Temptations — The entire band built their sound on tight doo-wop and Motown group harmonies, rehearsing five-part vocal stacks without instruments before laying down tracking takes. Tracks like It's Alright and their a cappella live workouts pull straight from the classic Motown vocal playbook. If the harmonies were sloppy, the whole band fell apart.
• Little Walter — Lewis learned the blues harp by hitchhiking across Europe in the late Sixties with a pocket full of Marine Band harmonicas, copying Little Walter's amplified Chicago style note for note. That overdriven, tongue-blocked harp sound is the lead instrument on Bad Is Bad and Workin' for a Livin'. He never played the harp like a pop novelty; he played it like a South Side session guy.
