   The Prog-Metal Grind

   Before prime-time television took over, Pettersen was fronting the progressive metal outfit Above Symmetry, cutting tracks under the name Aspera before signing with InsideOut. The band dropped *Ripples* in 2011, packing the tape with heavy odd-time riffs, syncopated chops, and relentless high-register power-metal belts. You can hear a guy pushing his diaphragm to cut through walls of heavy distortion rather than relying on autotune. It remains the heaviest, most technically demanding vocal work he ever committed to tape before the band fell apart in 2012.

   The Post-Reality Pop Shift

   Fresh off a runner-up finish on TV 2's *The X Factor*, Pettersen rushed into the studio alongside co-producer Erik Smaaland to capitalize on the momentum. The resulting record, 2011's *Based on a True Story*, threw pop-rock melodies against arena arrangements, brought to the finish line with mixes by John Fryer and Richard Lowe. It was designed to bridge the gap between his rock roots and chart radio, softening the edges of his earlier band days into accessible hooks. The ambition was pure commercial breakthrough, balancing raw rock energy with polished hook-first packaging.

   The Primetime Traditionalist

   After years of TV presenting gigs, Pettersen reemerged on Universal Music AS with *Tusen julelys* in 2020. Teaming up with producer Jesper Borgen, he swapped aggressive rock instrumentation for sweeping seasonal orchestration and warm, crooned mid-range ballads. The record and its expanded editions through 2023 established his pivot to Norwegian family-friendly traditional entertainment. It completely stripped out the rock posturing, relying on clean vocal delivery and pristine studio polish.

Influences

• Dream Theater — Pettersen's vocal style was forged directly in the Norwegian progressive metal scene that idolized James LaBrie's soaring high-register delivery. You hear the sharp dynamic jumps and sustained vibrato all over Above Symmetry's *Ripples*. It was the fundamental training ground that gave him his technical range.
• Symphony X — Russell Allen's heavy, chest-voice rasp served as the clear sonic template for Above Symmetry when they were still operating under the name Aspera. Pettersen leaned heavily on that aggressive grit when singing through complex, syncopated guitar runs. It kept his early sound rooted firmly in heavy power-prog.
• Queen — Pettersen has repeatedly cited Freddie Mercury as the gold standard for blending theatrical performance with theatrical rock vocals. That flair for dramatic, multi-tracked choruses pops right out on *Based on a True Story*. It explains why he always gravitated toward stadium hooks over understated singing.
• Bon Jovi — The radio-friendly hard rock balance Jon Bon Jovi cut in the eighties gave Pettersen his blueprint for going mainstream. On *Based on a True Story*, the guitars exist strictly to push driving, singalong vocal hooks to the front of the mix. He chased the exact same formula of hard rock aesthetics packaged for pop listeners.
• Michael Bublé — Bublé's modern revival of prime-time vocal jazz and holiday standards laid the groundwork for Pettersen's late-career move to Universal. That smooth, relaxed croon defines the arrangements on *Tusen julelys*. He abandoned the rock grit entirely to deliver clean, mid-century style holiday entertainment.
