Biography

American Doom Metal band.
Formed in 1992 in Chicago, Illinois.
Disbanded in November 2009.
Resumed activity in 2012.
Influenced by artists such as Paradise Lost, Dead Can Dance and Cranes, Avernus' early releases were a mix of Death Metal, Doom Metal, and cinematic atmospheres. The band's sound quickly evolved to incorporate a sound closer to Goth Rock and managed to record semi-consistently despite an ever-fluctuating roster of musicians. Guitarist and vocalist Rick McCoy was the sole constant member throughout the band's existence.
The band's activity slowed after 1998. They continued playing one-off shows in the Chicago area into the 2000s and released a demo compilation, EP, and live album during that time, before officially disbanding in 2009. Most of the original lineup returned for a reunion show in 2012, and the band resumed performing occasional one-off shows into the rest of the 2010s. In 2024 they released their second full-length album, their first new music in over twenty years.
