Born November 7, 1916 on Chicago's Northwest Side— died Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, May 11, 2011
Considered a prodigy soon after he first took up the piano but quit for four years until he heard Moritz Rosenthal, a former pupil of Franz Lizt, and agreed to become his protege.
In 1940 he waas on the staff of the Columbia Broadcasting System. He served with the Air Force for several years and after his discharge formed a dance band. In 1952 he joined Decca. His cutom-built piano "Oscar" had a built-in air-conditioned unit that kept the temperature and humidity equalized. It was four years in the making and was insured for $25,000.
