There are at least two artists with the name Bluebeard Bluebeard is a now defunct Japanese band. Some of the founding members went on to form the band AS MEIAS. Also, one of the guitarists plays in NAHT. Vocalist/Guitarist now plays in Rena Bluebeard are an American rock band formed in the early 70s. They have recently released their first new album in over 25 years, entitled "Deluxe With Reverb". The band currently consists of: Ellington Erin - Vocals

  1. The Studio Lite Session

    In 1999, the trio of Bodman, Noda, and Takahashi booked time at Studio Lite with Masatake Osato to capture their live set before the band fractured. They relied on clean, unadorned guitar tones, tight drum patterns, and a raw vocal delivery that sat right on the edge of breaking. The resulting self-titled release became their sole testament. You can hear the lack of budget in the dry room sound, but the sheer urgency of the performances makes the tape bleed with energy.

Influences

  • Sunny Day Real Estate — Bluebeard directly cited the Seattle emo pioneers as a massive structural influence on their songwriting. You hear it in the quiet-loud-quiet dynamics and the way Bodman's vocals strain against the melodic guitar work. It is the mid-90s Midwest emo blueprint exported straight to Tokyo.
  • Mineral — The band frequently pointed to Chris Simpson's interlocking guitar work and fragile vocal delivery as a guide for their own arrangements. The clean, chiming guitar lines on the self-titled track 'Clover' are a direct nod to Mineral's 'The Power of Failing' era. They took that slow-burn intensity and gave it a faster, more metropolitan edge.
  • Cap'n Jazz — The chaotic energy of the Chicago indie-punk scene was a major reference point for Japanese bands recording for Under Flower Records in the late '90s. Bluebeard channeled the frantic, almost amateurish charm of Victor Villarreal's guitar tapping. It keeps their technical math-rock tendencies from feeling too academic.
  • The Promise Ring — The band's driving rhythm section and melodic bounce heavily reflect the influence of Jade Tree Records' catalog. Shigeo Noda's melodic, busy basslines trace back directly to the bouncy foundation of 'Nothing Feels Good'. It gave their melancholy tunes a surprisingly kinetic, driving pulse.
  • Braid — In interviews discussing the late '90s Japanese emo explosion, the dual-guitar attack and syncopated rhythms of Braid are cited as a foundational text. Bluebeard took those angular, shifting time signatures and smoothed them out into something more melodic. You can hear that mathy tension in the jerky drum fills of George Takahashi.
