Biography

November 26, 1945, at Savoy in New York. Parker walked in without a functioning horn, borrowed a plastic Grafton-style junker or whatever spare alto was lying around, and dragged a nineteen-year-old Miles Davis through harmonic chord substitutions nobody had ever dared commit to shellac. Bud Powell was MIA, so Dizzy Gillespie jumped between trumpet and piano while Max Roach dropped bombs on the bass drum. That afternoon produced "Now's the Time" and "Billie's Bounce." In three hours, the swing era was dead, and every horn player in America had to relearn their instrument or go hungry. The tragedy isn't that he died at thirty-four looking like a man of sixty in the Baroness de Koenigswarter's hotel suite. The tragedy is how damn hard he had to fight just to keep a working rhythm section together while pawnshop tickets piled up for his saxophones. When he was locked in, he wasn't just playing fast; he was outlining upper extensions—ninths, elevenths, flat fives—at tempos that would make modern shredders drop their picks in terror. Half of his discography was captured on portable disc-cutters in smoky rooms like the Royal Roost, but every single phrase cut like a switchblade.
