Biography
Chas Newby (born June 18, 1941 in Blackpool - died May 2023) jumped in December 1960 as the bass player with The Beatles. Stuart Sutcliffe had stayed behind in Hamburg to spend Christmas with and her family and the band was short of a bass player. Pete Best suggested Chas Newby, who played with The Black Jacks. As he was on university holidays, he agreed and performed with The Beatles in December 1960 at four gigs:
17 December, Casbah Club, Liverpool
24 December, Grosvenor Ballroom, Liscard
27 December, Litherland Town Hall
31 December, Casbah Club.
John Lennon asked him to accompany the group to Hamburg, but Newby wanted to go back to university. Paul McCartney became, reluctantly, the the band's new bass player. Newby taught mathematics and in his spare time he plays at The Rackets and The Quarrymen.
