Biography

Dominik Streicher set up the mics for msm-productions with engineer Ephraim Hahn to capture a teenager tackling Pietro Locatelli's Harmonic Labyrinth. Locatelli wrote that damn piece to make soloists sweat blood, and Chua tore into the bariolage passages without a flinch. Most classical prodigies get handled with kid gloves by risk-averse marketing departments, but she kicked the studio door open by pairing standard Baroque warhorses with pure, wrist-snapping Italian caprices. The real test came when Pentatone signed her for an artist residency run with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra instead of rushing out generic recital filler. She didn't rely on syrupy vibrato or overcooked sentiment to sell records. She leaned into lean articulation, terrifyingly accurate intonation, and a complete refusal to turn 18th-century scores into museum pieces.

The Arc of Chloe Chua

The pivots — what forced Chloe Chua to reinvent.

  1. The Baroque gauntlet

She arrived on Pentatone with 2023's Vivaldi & Locatelli, backed by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra during her residency. Instead of playing it safe with an easy calling card, she tackled Locatelli's Harmonic Labyrinth alongside The Four Seasons, laying bare every micro-shift in her left hand under Dominik Streicher's production. The record proved she had razor-sharp bow control rather than just competitive speed. It set a serious, no-gimmicks standard for her studio career right out of the gate.

  2. Bravura romanticism and modern narrative

She pivoted hard into sheer technical excess and mid-century program music on 2024's Butterfly Lovers & Paganini. Splitting podium duties between Mario Venzago for Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 and Rodolfo Barráez for the Chen Gang and He Zhanhao score, she traded dry Baroque precision for huge dynamic sweeps and vocal-style phrasing. Her handling of Paganini avoided empty showboating, anchoring the acrobatics to real rhythmic discipline. You can hear a player actively resisting the trap of becoming a one-style technician.

  3. The complete classical cycle

By 2025 she dropped the massive three-disc set Mozart: Violin Concertos, capturing multi-year sessions tracked with conductor Hans Graf. Taking on the complete concerto cycle alongside violist Ziyu He for the Sinfonia Concertante demanded architectural patience over sheer fireworks. The tone stripped back the lush Romantic varnish for crisp, unforced phrasing and rhythmic transparency. It documented her evolution right as she transitioned her studies to Kolja Blacher in Berlin, closing out her formative residency on her own terms.

Influences

  • Yehudi Menuhin — Chua broke into international view by taking joint first prize at the 2018 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists. Menuhin's lineage of lean, intellectual fidelity to the score runs straight through her approach. You hear his rigorous textural discipline in the way she refuses to over-sentimentalize phrasing.
  • Niccolò Paganini — She tackled his Violin Concerto No. 1 as the technical anchor for her 2024 album Butterfly Lovers & Paganini. His notoriously punitive left-hand harmonics and ricochet bowing dictate the mechanics of her upper-register agility. She attacks the cadenzas as structural cornerstones rather than cheap circus tricks.
  • Antonio Vivaldi — His concertos provided the foundation for her 2023 debut album Vivaldi & Locatelli on Pentatone. Her interpretation eschews Romantic bloat in favor of biting, historically minded articulation across The Four Seasons. It is the direct source of her rhythmic drive.
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — She debuted with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra playing his work to an empty hall in 2020 before recording the massive 2025 box set Mozart: Violin Concertos. His demanding, transparent voice forces an unforgiving purity where bad intonation has nowhere to hide. You hear that exact clarity in how she shapes the exposed solo entries.
  • Pietro Locatelli — She deliberately paired his Harmonic Labyrinth against mainstream repertoire on her 2023 Pentatone debut. Locatelli's extreme caprices pushed violin technique into high-wire athletic territory centuries before modern virtuosity. You hear his fingerboard-spanning acrobatics tested in her blistering tempo choices.
