Biography
Cigarettes After Sex is an American dream pop band formed in El Paso, Texas, in 2008 by Greg Gonzalez. The band is known for its ethereal and often dream-like musical style, lyrics focused on love and romance, and Gonzalez's androgynous voice. While frequently categorized as ambient pop, the band is also associated with shoegaze, slowcore, and indie rock. The band's debut extended play, "I.," was released in 2012, with the song "Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby" gaining popularity through commercial licensing.
The Arc of Cigarettes After Sex
The pivots — what forced Cigarettes After Sex to reinvent.
The Stairwell Tape
Gonzalez spent years cycling through lineups in El Paso trying to find a sound before dragging a four-track recorder into a university stairwell in 2012. Tracking 'I.' on a single night in that echo chamber locked in his entire aesthetic: slow tempos, whispered vocals, and drenched guitar lines. The tape quietly blew up on early algorithmic YouTube without any promo budget. That accidental viral momentum forced him to relocate to New York and build a permanent band around that exact tape hiss.
The Self-Titled Blueprint
Gonzalez recruited bassist Randy Miller, keyboardist Phillip Tubbs, and drummer Jacob Tomsky to turn a solo recording experiment into a bulletproof touring unit. They cut the 2017 self-titled LP in Brooklyn, sticking strictly to mono-like spatial isolation and noir-pop minimalism. Tracks like 'Apocalypse' broke through the noise purely on mood and word-of-mouth. It turned a bedroom slowcore project into a massive international live draw.
The Global Formula
Moving to Mallorca to track 2019's 'Cry' and later cutting 2024's 'X's' cemented their status as master stylists who refuse to compromise their palette. Despite bigger budgets and global arena dates, they kept the arrangements skeletal and intimate. The songwriting stayed locked on slow-dance heartache, vintage microphones, and warm electric guitar patches. They built a massive catalog without ever speeding up the metronome.
Influences
- Mazzy Star — Gonzalez has repeatedly cited Hope Sandoval and David Roback as the primary architects of his nocturnal acoustic sound. You can hear their slow-burning slide guitars and narcotic pacing across every single track on 'I.' It is dream-pop stripped of all fuzz and left bare under a single spotlight.
- Red House Painters — Gonzalez has frequently referenced Mark Kozelek's early slowcore records as a direct blueprint for his storytelling and whisper-quiet vocal delivery. The spacious drum patterns and agonizingly slow chord changes on tracks like 'Sweet' come straight out of the 1993 'Rollercoaster' playbook. It proves you can make heavy music without a single distorted amp.
- The Paris Sisters — Gonzalez explicitly cited Phil Spector's whisper-pop production on The Paris Sisters' 1961 single 'I Love How You Love Me' as the vocal blueprint for the band. The breathy, close-mic delivery and heavy chamber reverb on his lead vocals are a direct lift of Priscilla Paris. He took 1960s girl-group vulnerability and slowed it to a crawl.
- Cocteau Twins — Robin Guthrie's lush guitar processing and heavy reliance on space influenced how Gonzalez routes his guitar through layered delay pedals. You hear the hazy, ethereal texture in the atmospheric keyboard swells on the self-titled debut. They took Guthrie's dream-pop atmosphere and paired it with plainspoken English lyrics.
- Francoise Hardy — Gonzalez has cited 1960s French pop icons like Hardy as major influences on his romantic lyrical style and melancholic pacing. You hear that continental, smoky lounge feel in the basslines and delicate guitar arpeggios on 'Cry'. It gives their Texas-born sound a timeless European cinema mood.
