Biography

Russell Elevado tracked Voodoo straight to two-inch analog tape at Electric Lady with no digital metronome in sight, while Questlove dragged the beat behind Pino Palladino's bass until the whole groove sounded like it was falling down a flight of stairs in slow motion. That session fundamentally broke how contemporary rhythm sections thought about time. While mid-nineties radio was choking on quantized drum machines and plastic synth patches, Michael Archer showed up with a Rhodes piano, an obsession with vintage tape saturation, and an impossible falsetto, dragging American soul music by the collar back into the dirt. Then the industry did what it always does: it stripped him to the waist for a video, turned a fiercely disciplined multi-instrumentalist into a beefcake commodity, and nearly broke him in half. What followed was a fourteen-year disappearance into personal hell, legal wreckage, and studio folklore that would have permanently buried any other artist. When he finally walked out of Sear Sound and MSR with Black Messiah under his arm, it was not some polished, nostalgic apology. It was a jagged, polyrhythmic, politically charged funk riot that proved the man never forgot how to play his way out of the dark.
