Biography

Fang Island was an American indie rock band formed in Providence, Rhode Island, and based in Brooklyn, New York. The group consisted of guitarists Jason Bartell, Chris Georges and drummer Marc St. Sauveur. The band quietly disbanded in 2015. Jason Bartell continues to produce new music as Mythless. Fang Island began, oddly enough, as an art school project while the band members were attending the prodigious Rhode Island School of Design (also the foundation for Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The Arc of Fang Island

The pivots — what forced Fang Island to reinvent.

  1. The RISD Art-Math Genesis

Formed as an art school project in Providence, the early lineup hammered out complex, instrumental-leaning math rock that didn't take itself too seriously. That scrappy, DIY energy drove their early self-released material, including 'Day of the Great Leap' and the 2008 EP 'Sky Gardens'. Nicholas Sadler brought some of his frenetic guitar intensity over from Daughters, helping lock down the frantic triple-guitar attack. You hear a band figuring out how to weaponize technical prog chops into pure, unvarnished crowd euphoria.

  2. The Sargent House High-Five Explosion

Relocating to Brooklyn and signing to Sargent House put them right on the national radar. They booked time at Machines With Magnets with producers Keith Souza and Seth Manchester to track their 2010 self-titled album, 'Fang Island'. The session was lightning captured on tape: soaring guitar harmonies, thunderous gang vocals, and Marc St. Sauveur driving the beat like a freight train. Cuts like 'Daisy' turned them into critical darlings because nobody else had the guts to play guitar music that sincere and fucking loud.

Influences

  • Thin Lizzy — The entire engine of Fang Island's sound is built directly on the harmonized twin-lead guitar clinic laid down by Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. You hear it across tracks like 'Carefully', where the guitars split into soaring melodic thirds instead of traditional rhythm-and-lead roles. It takes classic arena rock swagger and runs it at breakneck indie-math tempo.
  • Don Caballero — Before chasing pure pop melody, the band cut their teeth on the complex time signatures and interlocking guitar tapping pioneered by Ian Williams and Damon Che. The shifting meters in 'Life Coach' and the early cuts on 'Sky Gardens' owe their entire rhythmic backbone to Don Cab's instrumental playbook. It provided the technical skeleton that kept their anthemic riffs from collapsing into cheesy power metal.
  • Lightning Bolt — Coming out of the Providence art scene around RISD, you could not escape the raw, high-volume assault of Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson. Fang Island took that noisy, blown-out Rhode Island basement energy and deliberately inverted its nihilism into bright major keys. You still hear the brutal low-end thump and sweaty, chaotic drum intensity driving the backbone of the self-titled debut.
  • Queen — Brian May's multitracked guitar orchestras and Queen's dense, multivoice choir hooks are all over Fang Island's core aesthetic. The climax of 'The Sides of Men' relies directly on stacked guitar fanfares and stacked, celebratory group vocals. It's unabashed pomp-rock showmanship recontextualized for sweaty rock clubs.
  • Boston — Tom Scholz's hyper-compressed, polished wall of guitar harmonies was a direct touchstone for the band's unapologetic pursuit of massive hooks. The relentless, arena-ready leads on 'Chompers' unapologetically borrow the bright, euphoric sheen of classic late-seventies American radio rock. They threw out indie rock's fear of sounding corporate and embraced the sheer kinetic joy of Scholz's guitar layering.
