Biography
English singer & comedian, famous for playing the banjolele (banjo-ukulele hybrid) & performing a variety of light, comical songs. Eventually became a popular star of stage and screen.
His father, also named George Formby, also made records, all acoustic.
George Formby, Jr., OBE Born 26 May 1904 in Wigan, England. Died 6 March 1961.
Married to Beryl Formby (1924-1960, her death).
Formby never had been to school and couldn't read or write. His wife Beryl had to rehearse him through every line he ever spoke on the stage or on film, or sang in all songs too.
Formby first sand his best known song and the one that became his trademark, "Leaning on a Lamp Post", in his film []iFeather Your Nest (1937). He was top of the British box office from 1938-1944. He was inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame in 2004.
