Biography

Harsh Symmetry is the synthesizer driven solo project of the California based musician Julian Sharwarko. Blending 1980's post-punk and new wave influences with more contemporary genres like dark wave and minimal wave, Harsh Symmetry paints a refreshing and danceable picture while maintaining a good sense of revivalism. Harsh Symmetry is finished. His new project: Omnihell

The Arc of Harsh Symmetry

The pivots — what forced Harsh Symmetry to reinvent.

  1. The Display Model Era

The 2022 debut dropped during a massive revival of the darkwave scene, but it stood out because of its commitment to hardware-driven minimalism. Sharwarko handled the writing and recording solo, leaning heavily on the classic EBM pulse and cold-wave percussion that defined the early 80s underground. You can hear the lack of outside interference in the tight, claustrophobic arrangements. It’s a record defined by its constraints, proving you don’t need a massive studio if you’ve got the right patches on a Sequential Circuits synth.

  2. The Imitation Shift

By the time Imitation rolled around in 2023, the sound opened up just enough to let some melody through the gloom. The production got sharper, moving away from the basement-tape feel toward something that sounds like it could actually fill a club floor. It wasn't a sellout move, just a refinement of the gear and the songwriting. The tracks became more structured, trading pure atmosphere for actual hooks while keeping the hardware-only ethos intact.

Influences

  • Depeche ModeSharwarko has explicitly cited Black Celebration as a primary blueprint for his vocal delivery and atmospheric density. You hear it in the way he stacks low-register harmonies against sharp, industrial-lite percussion. It’s the sound of the Basildon boys before they went full-blown stadium rock.
  • The Danse SocietyHe’s name-checked them in interviews when discussing the intersection of post-punk and synth-pop. The influence shows up in those sweeping, minor-key synth pads that provide a cinematic backdrop for the mechanical drum patterns. It captures that specific 1983 UK gloom without the cheese.
  • Clan of XymoxThe 4AD era of Xymox is all over the Harsh Symmetry DNA, particularly the blend of gothic melancholy and danceable sequences. The shimmering, chorus-heavy textures on tracks like 'Mirror Image' are a direct nod to Ronny Moorings’ early production style. It’s that perfect balance of depressing lyrics and upbeat tempo.
  • The CureSharwarko has pointed to Pornography as the gold standard for creating a sense of dread with minimal instrumentation. You can hear that influence in the bleak, repetitive bass lines that anchor his tracks. It’s about the space between the notes as much as the notes themselves.
  • Boy HarsherAs the modern standard-bearers for the new darkwave movement, their success paved the way for the minimalist hardware approach Sharwarko uses. He’s acknowledged their role in reviving the sound and making it viable for a new generation of listeners. The raw, analog grit of the SP-1200 or similar drum machines is a shared lineage here.
