Biography
Idris Rahman (b. 1976) is an English clarinetist, saxophonist and music producer, brother of pianist Zoe Rahman. Born in Chichester, West Sussex to a Bengali father and an English-Irish mother, Rahman was inspired and influenced by Bengali folk, pop, and film music from the 1950s. Idris Rahman is a co-leader and producer of reggae/afrobeat band Soothsayers – they released numerous albums and had been performing across Europe for over ten years.
As a clarinetist, Idris Rahman is a regular member of the Arun Ghosh Sextet, and had collaborated with Aidan Love's Forty Thieves Orkestar, as well as Oriole group. In 2008, he released a Where Rivers Meet (UK 2008) (opens in a new tab) album with his sister Zoe Rahman, and appeared as a special guest on Zoe Rahman Trio's Live (UK & Europe 2009) (opens in a new tab), recorded at Pizza Express club in April 2007.
Rahman has performed and recorded as a saxophonist with Osibisa, Ayub Ogada, Dodgy, Reem Kelani, Julia Biel and numerous other jazz and world music artists. In addition to all Soothsayers' albums, Idris Rahman also produced and mixed two albums by vocalist Julia Biel, and worked on a few Mercury Prize-nominated albums, including Zoe's second album Melting Pot (UK 2005) (opens in a new tab), and Basquiat Strings With Seb Rochford (UK 2007) (opens in a new tab), a debut release by Basquiat Strings.
