Biography

He tracked the drums on an Akai MPC with the quantize function permanently turned off. Every other producer in the mid-nineties treated that grid like gospel, letting machine timing lock their kicks to a rigid snap. James Yancey let his fingers drag behind the pocket, dragging the hi-hats and snares until the groove sounded like it was about to fall down the stairs without ever losing its balance. When The Ummah rewired A Tribe Called Quest and Slum Village started tape-trading Fan-Tas-Tic around Detroit, half the industry assumed a broken machine was playing those drunken chops. The industry responded the way it always does: by watering it down into coffee-shop neo-soul wallpaper and then shelving his actual rap records when the labels merged. MCA swallowed Pay Jay, locked up his vocal ambitions, and left him holding the bag. Instead of groveling to major-label A&Rs, he stripped the gloss off, went raw with a turntable and a sampler, and relocated to the West Coast. He spent his final weeks in a hospital room cutting thirty-one beat collages out of obscure soul 45s while his body failed him. No marketing plan, no focus groups, just pure intuition pressed into wax before the clock ran out.
