Biography

TJ Strohmer started tracking out of bedroom corners and rehearsal spaces in Philadelphia, burying drum machines and tape hiss under thick layers of blown-out guitars. Early tapes like 'no funeral' and 'with u' sounded like someone had dragged slowcore through a dirt floor. Strohmer didn't treat lo-fi like a gimmick. It was the only budget he had, and the suffocating compression turned his fragile songwriting into claustrophobic gold. Then he brought in a full lineup and took the project to Jeff Zeigler at Uniform Recording to track 'Animal Drowning.' That room turned the bedroom noise into a widescreen nightmare. Strings, sweeping synths from Max Black, and massive percussion took over without losing the bleak, unvarnished misery of the early demos. It proved Knifeplay wasn't just a sad kid with a cassette recorder, but a heavy-hitting ensemble built to out-gloom the entire scene.

The Arc of Knifeplay

The pivots — what forced Knifeplay to reinvent.

  1. The Bedroom Tape Days

Between 2017 and 2019, Strohmer worked essentially as a solitary unit, churning out the 'no funeral' and 'Pearlty' material on cheap recording setups. The arrangements were minimal, gritty, and drenched in warped tape delay. It captured an immediate, raw sense of Philadelphia isolation where acoustic strums competed with blown-out fuzz pedals for space in the mix.

  2. The Full-Band Expansion

By 2022, Strohmer expanded Knifeplay into a sprawling live unit, recruiting bassist Alex Stackhouse, synth player Max Black, and percussionist John Sciortino. Entering Uniform Recording to track 'Animal Drowning' blew the scope wide open with orchestral flourishes, dense shoegaze squalls, and slowcore pacing. The resulting record established them beyond the DIY tape circuit into full cinematic despair.

Influences

  • Duster — Strohmer has cited the San Jose slowcore pioneers as the direct inspiration for Knifeplay's early tape-hiss aesthetic and downtempo structures. You hear it across 'Pearlty' in the sluggish, dragging tempos and the unvarnished room noise left in the mix. They took Duster's space-rock sparseness and gave it a sharper, dirtier edge.
  • Sparklehorse — Mark Linkous set the gold standard for taking delicate, broken acoustic songs and wrapping them in abrasive, distorted noise. Strohmer's vocal delivery and cracked melodic instincts borrow heavily from that playbook on tracks like 'Animal Drowning.' It is that exact balance of heartbreaking pop beneath static.
  • My Bloody Valentine — The glide guitar techniques and submerged vocal mixing across their full-band catalog trace straight back to Kevin Shields' work on 'Loveless.' You hear it in how the guitars on 'Animal Drowning' pitch-bend continuously under massive reverb tails. It transforms what could be standard indie rock into an overwhelming tidal wave.
  • Red House Painters — Mark Kozelek's grueling 90s slowcore epics paved the path for Knifeplay's long-form, painfully patient track arrangements. The slow-burn dynamic builds and deeply personal lyrical dread across Strohmer's catalog lean hard into this lineage. They take their sweet time getting to the emotional punch.
  • The Cure — The sweeping, chorused bass lines and atmospheric synth layers introduced on their later studio work come directly from the blueprint of 'Disintegration.' You can hear Alex Stackhouse carrying the melodic weight on the low end while the guitars drift in the background. It turns basement gloom into stadium-sized goth grandeur.
