Biography

Martyn Green (22 April 1899 – 8 February 1975), was an English actor and singer and director of Operettas. He was famous mainly for acting and singing in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas where he started in the choir and later played comedy roles for the D'Oyly Carte Company in London from 1922 to 1951, before leaving for Hollywood to act in musical G&S films. In 1959 he lost a leg below the knee in a freak accident involving a garage elevator, but a false leg did not deter him from still continuing as actor / singer (albeit on a lesser scale) and director. He also acted in a few non-musical films, such as A Lovely Way To Die and The Iceman Cometh. He died in Hollywood in 1975.
