Migala
rock-based experimental band from Spain
Madrid, Spain · 1996 – 2005
Migala is a music group from Madrid, Spain, active 1996–2005.
Biography
Migala was an experimental rock collective from Madrid, Spain, active from 1996 to 2005. Known for cinematic, hypnotic soundscapes and complex arrangements blending post-rock, alt-folk, traditional Spanish music, and Anglo-American influences, the band evolved from a core sextet (Rubén Moreno, Jordi Sancho, Coque Yturriaga, Abel Hernández, Diego Yturriaga, Rodrigo Hernández) to include collaborators like Nacho Vegas and Kieran Stephen (ex-Los Planetas). Their lyrics, often in English, created a mature, literary universe of wistful and somber beauty.
Migala's discography includes "Diciembre 3 a.m." (1997), "Así duele un verano" (1998), "Arde" (2000), "Restos de un incendio" (2002), and "La increíble aventura" (2004). They toured extensively in Europe opening for acts like Smog, Mark Kozelek, The Magnetic Fields, and Damon & Naomi, and served as Will Oldham's (Bonnie “Prince” Billy) backing band in Spain in 1998. Sub Pop released "Arde" in the US in July 2001 (after an October 2000 Singles Club single championed by Stuart David of Belle & Sebastian), leading to an American tour. Pitchfork gave "Arde" a 9.3/10 in 2001—the highest score for any Spanish artist to date—praising its "elemental beauty." The album also succeeded in France (PopLane, 2001), with strong coverage in Les Inrockuptibles, Magic!, Le Monde, and Libération.
A 180g vinyl reissue of "Arde" is scheduled for release by Acuarela Discos in the first half of 2026, remastered from the original 2000 Cubase projects for enhanced clarity and power while preserving its organic lo-fi essence.
