Biography
Oleg "Mission" Mishin did not just walk into the Russian metal scene. He brought a classical flute to a heavy metal guitar fight. Long before his solo banner flew, he was the multi-instrumental engine room behind Catharsis. He was rewriting power metal rules with classical woodwinds. He was also tracking keyboards for some of the most bombastic arrangements in the post-Soviet metal boom. He spent decades acting as the secret weapon on other people's records. Finally, he decided to cut his own path with the solo project Mission. His solo output under the Oleg Mission banner is a weird, dense beast. It is marked by a obsessive level of control over the arrangements. Mishin did not just write the tracks. He handled the lead guitars, the flute passages, and the vocal arrangements himself. He dragged in trusted players from the E-zone and Catharsis camps to execute his hyper-specific vision. The result was a brief but intense run of symphonic-tinged heavy rock. It stood apart from the generic speed metal clone bands of the late 2000s.
The Arc of Олег "Mission" Мишин
The pivots — what forced Олег "Mission" Мишин to reinvent.
The Symphonic Foundation
Mishin spent years sharpening his tools in Catharsis. He helped shape their signature neoclassical power metal sound before stepping out on his own. In 2007, he channeled this experience into the debut solo album Angel. He recruited drummer Anatoly Levitin from E-zone to lay down a more grounded, hard-rocking foundation. This pivot allowed Mishin to step away from the relentless double-bass drumming of his main band. He focused instead on mid-tempo, melodic songwriting where his flute and guitar could trade lead spots.
The Beast Within
By 2011, Mishin wanted a heavier, more aggressive edge. He delivered this with his second solo release, Bestiya. The record stripped away some of the polite symphonic sheen of the debut. It replaced it with a darker, riff-heavy approach that bordered on progressive power metal. Mishin pushed his vocals into rougher territory. He relied on sharp guitar-and-flute unisons that sounded more like a weapon than an orchestral ornament. It was a brief, intense peak. It proved he could carry a heavy record without the backing of a massive band structure.
Influences
- Jethro Tull — Mishin has repeatedly cited Ian Anderson as the primary reason he picked up the flute in a rock context. You hear this influence in the aggressive, percussive overblowing technique on the title track of Angel. He treats the woodwind like a lead guitar rather than a backing pad.
- Rainbow — Ritchie Blackmore's neoclassical guitar style and love for medieval melodies are baked deep into Mishin's DNA. This neoclassical phrasing is obvious in the main guitar solo on the track 'Krasnyj Sfinks.' It mimics Blackmore's signature fluid minor-scale runs.
- Yngwie Malmsteen — Mishin's formal classical training met its match when he discovered Malmsteen's rapid-fire arpeggios. The sweeping guitar work throughout the Bestiya album shows a direct lineage to Rising Force. He copies that specific style of blending Bach-style progressions with high-gain metal.
- Deep Purple — The heavy hammond-and-guitar interplay of Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore served as the blueprint for Mishin's keyboard-heavy arrangements. This classic British hard rock dynamic is the foundation of 'Na Ladoni.' The keys and guitars lock together to form a wall of sound.
- Iron Maiden — The galloping bass lines and twin-lead guitar harmonies of Steve Harris's crew are a constant reference point for Mishin's rhythm section. You can hear this structural influence in the driving tempo and melodic dual-lead guitar hooks of 'Zvezda'.
