The Raw Fuzz Blueprint
Dropping Amanita Kingdom in 2014 and following it up quickly with their self-titled record in 2016, Moon Coven planted their flag in stripped-down stoner doom. The production was thick, unpolished, and built around monolithic, repetitive fuzz riffs that relied on raw amp rumble. It captured a young Swedish outfit finding its footing by leaning into heavy distortion and mid-tempo groove before experimenting with atmosphere.
Atmospheric Expansion
After a five-year studio silence, they returned with 2021's Slumber Wood and 2023's Sun King, completely overhauling their dynamic range. The fuzz remained massive, but they introduced spacious, reverb-drenched psychedelic textures and cleaner melodic phrasing. The result was a far more cinematic, polished take on heavy rock that gave the low-end weight actual space to echo.
Influences
- Black Sabbath — The entire structural vocabulary of Swedish doom traces straight back to Tony Iommi's tritone riffs and downtuned Gibson SG. Moon Coven's mid-tempo stomps and swinging rhythm section lift their core dynamic directly from Sabbath's early 70s run. Without Master of Reality, this band literally does not exist.
- Electric Wizard — The obsession with blown-out, feedback-drenched fuzz and occult, hazy pacing stems directly from the standard set on Dopethrone. You can hear that suffocating, bass-heavy swamp all over Amanita Kingdom. It is the gold standard for European sludge distortion.
- Sleep — Matt Pike's wall-of-sound amplifier philosophy and Al Cisneros's hypnotic, drone-like bass lines define Moon Coven's pacing. Their willingness to lock into a single crushing groove for minutes at a time comes right out of the Holy Mountain playbook. They take the slow-burn crawl as gospel.
- Kyuss — The low-tuned desert rock groove and thick guitar tones engineered on Welcome to Sky Valley helped shape the broader stoner rock framework Moon Coven operates within. The rhythmic swing underneath their crushing leads carries that distinct Palm Desert swagger. It keeps the heavy crawl from turning entirely into funeral doom.
- Windhand — The modern blueprint of blending massive, distorted doom riffs with hazy, ethereal vocal melodies was perfected by the Richmond outfit earlier in the 2010s. Moon Coven uses that same contrast between melodic vocal delivery and devastatingly heavy guitars across their later work like Slumber Wood. It turns raw sludge into an atmospheric experience.
