Biography
Nice Strong Arm were formed 1987 in Austin, Texas. Initially boasting two drummers (on their debut LP "Reality Bath") the band stripped down to a three-piece (consisting of Kevin Thomson, Jason Asnes and Jeffrey Kent Hoskins), moved to New York where they were immersed in an already densely populated alternative rock scene. They initially found comparison amongst the likes of Live Skull, Swans and Sonic Youth (the latter of whom the band were initially criticised for sounding too alike).

The Texas Swamp-Sludge Run
Nice Strong Arm started out as Austin outsiders building monolithic, dirge-tempo noise under Gerard Smith's blown-out guitar attack. Their 1987 debut Reality Bath sounded like machinery choking on river mud, instantly catching the ear of Homestead Records boss Gerard Cosloy. The rhythm section didn't groove so much as hammer industrial stakes into the floorboards. It was ugly, suffocating post-hardcore that refused to give the Texas skate-punk crowd anything easy to bounce to.
The Manhattan Industrial Grind
Packing their gear into a van for New York City in 1988 shifted the band's focus from swampy sprawl to angular, claustrophobic aggression. 1988's Mind Furnace and the 1989 Cloud Machine EP saw them adopting the harsh, metallic precision of the lower Manhattan avant-noise underground. Smith swapped loose dissonance for tightly coiled, industrial-leaning riffs that felt like steel girders dropping on concrete. They toured relentlessly across collapsing East Coast basements until the grind tore the lineup apart right after Stress City in 1990.
Influences
- Sonic Youth — Gerard Smith explicitly built Nice Strong Arm around the alternate tunings and drumstick-under-the-bridge dissonance championed by Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo. You hear it across Reality Bath in the ringing, non-standard octave overtones and grinding feedback sustain. They took that art-school drone and dragged it straight through the Texas dirt.
- Swans — Michael Gira's early mid-80s slog on Filth and Cop set the template for Nice Strong Arm's oppressive, slow-motion rhythm section. The drum patterns on tracks like 'Mind Furnace' mimic the punishing, downward-hammering tempo of Swans' early industrial noise period. It is physical exhaustion captured on tape.
- Flipper — The San Francisco punk legends established the blueprint for slow, bass-driven spite that alienated typical hardcore kids. Nice Strong Arm adopted that exact blown-out, overdriven bass distortion as the lead harmonic anchor on their first recordings. It turned their early Texas sound into a confrontational, sluggish brawl.
- Public Image Ltd — Jah Wobble's dub-heavy bass runs and Keith Levene's brittle, metallic guitar stabs on Metal Box directly informed Nice Strong Arm's spatial post-punk arrangements. You can spot the influence in the cavernous, dry-room production of the Cloud Machine EP where the guitar cuts like sheet metal over an immovable low end. They favored cold geometry over blues-based rock scales.
- Killing Joke — Geordie Walker's churning, chorus-pedal guitar assault and Big Paul Ferguson's tribal drumming provided the rhythmic engine Nice Strong Arm adapted for the underground club circuit. The driving, mechanical persistence of Stress City leans heavily on that post-punk motorik aggression. It gave their final records a relentless, forward-charging dread.
