Biography

María Zardoya did not start this project to play the major label game. Operating under the moniker Not for Radio, she abandoned the collaborative safety net of her previous band, The Marías, to figure out what her voice sounded like when there was no one else in the room to compromise with. The initial bedroom tracking sessions for the 2025 single "Melt" were deliberately sparse, built around cheap synth pads and dry vocal takes that felt almost uncomfortably close to the mic. It was a conscious stripping away of the lush, cinematic indie-pop sheen that made her a playlist staple in the early 2020s. By the time she lined up the 2026 releases, the bedroom-pop tag felt totally useless. Bringing in Zero 7 to remix "Puddles" was not a random licensing play. It was a deliberate nod to the late-nineties UK trip-hop scene, trading clean digital lines for warm, dubby basslines and late-night tape hiss. The resulting tracks do not sound like a side project trying to find its footing. They sound like someone who finally got tired of the polished West Coast sun and locked themselves in a dark room with a sampler and a crate of dusty down-tempo vinyl.

The Arc of Not for Radio

The pivots — what forced Not for Radio to reinvent.

  1. The Clean Slate

Stripping away the collaborative multi-instrumental arrangements of her past, Zardoya launched the project in 2025 with 'Melt' to focus entirely on minimal electronic structures. She recorded her vocals dry and upfront, avoiding the heavy reverb and layered harmonies that had defined her previous work. The track proved she could command a room with nothing but a basic drum machine pulse and her raw voice. It established a stark, post-midnight mood that drew a sharp line between her past band and her solo future.

  2. The Down-Tempo Shift

In 2026, Zardoya leaned directly into late-nineties British electronic production by handing 'Puddles' over to trip-hop legends Zero 7 for a full reconstruction. This move shifted her sound from bedroom indie-pop to smoky, analog-driven down-tempo soul. The remix replaced her clean digital backing tracks with warm Rhodes chords and a lazy, swinging drum break. You hear this new direction bleeding directly into the follow-up single 'Bloom', which trades bedroom-pop minimalism for deep, dubby basslines and lush, spacey textures.

Influences

  • Zero 7 — Zardoya commissioned the duo to remix 'Puddles' in 2026, directly linking her sound to their blueprint. You hear their influence in the warm Rhodes electric piano chords and lazy, syncopated drum loops on 'Bloom'. It is the exact same late-night chillout vibe they perfected on Simple Things.
  • Portishead — Zardoya has repeatedly cited the Bristol group's bleak, cinematic atmosphere as a major touchstone for her vocal delivery. The influence shows up in the dry, intimate vocal mixing of 'Melt', which mimics Beth Gibbons' icy, close-mic technique. It swaps standard pop sweetness for a tense, hushed delivery.
  • Sade — The blueprint for Zardoya's understated, smoky vocal style comes directly from Sade Adu's minimalist soul classic Diamond Life. You hear it in the effortless, low-register delivery on 'Bloom' where she refuses to oversing or shout over the beat. It is about restraint rather than vocal acrobatics.
  • Broadcast — The late Trish Keenan's use of vintage analog synths and eerie, psychedelic pop structures heavily informed Zardoya's solo synth choices. The warbling, slightly out-of-tune synthesizer leads on 'Melt' sound like they were pulled straight from Broadcast's The Noise Made by People. It grounds her modern electronic pop in old-school tape warble.
  • Cardigans — The hushed, whisper-singing style popularized by Nina Persson on early records like Life is a direct ancestor to Zardoya's vocal approach. The breezy but melancholic vocal delivery on 'Puddles' relies on that same breathy, close-to-the-mic intimacy. It is pop music delivered like a secret.
