Biography

Jack Shirley tracked their 2019 self-titled debut live to two-inch tape at The Atomic Garden, pinning Erica Shultz's throat straight to the red meters with zero digital safety nets. Most modern screamo bands hide behind sterile quantizing and clean amp modelers because playing this fast actually breaks your hands. Nuvolascura showed up with blown-out Peavey heads and blasted through twenty minutes of rabid mathcore time-signatures without giving the tape machine a second to breathe. What keeps them from being just another blast-beat novelty in the DIY basement circuit is sheer structural malice. They don't write songs so much as trigger controlled cave-ins, swerving from frantic skramz dissonances into ugly, mid-tempo heaviness before you can even parse the riff. If you want pristine, polished post-hardcore, go dig through the major label bins. This is raw, hyper-caffeinated violence built entirely for sweat-soaked VFW halls.

The Arc of Nuvolascura

The pivots — what forced Nuvolascura to reinvent.

  1. The Basement Tape Run

Dropping the self-titled demo cassette in 2017 dropped them square into the California screamo revival without warning. They kept the production dirt-cheap and blown out, packing multiple frantic ideas into tracks that barely grazed the sixty-second mark. You can hear the unhinged urgency of four people fighting for room on a floor without stage monitors.

  2. The Atomic Garden Assault

Hitting the studio for the 2019 self-titled LP and following it with 2020's As We Suffer From Memory and Imagination forced their frantic chaos into a lethal, cohesive weapon. Tracking in an actual studio didn't sand down the edges; it just made the mathcore angularity hit like broken glass. Shultz's vocals moved from buried basement shrieks straight into your face, anchoring some of the most punishing time signatures in modern hardcore.

  3. The Pressure Valve

A five-year silence between full-lengths broke with 2025's How This All Ends, testing whether that frantic early fury could survive real-world wear and tear. Instead of mellowing out or chasing clean hooks, the arrangements stretched out just enough to let the dread breathe between blasts. The technical stops land heavier, trading blind panic for cold, deliberate execution.

Influences

  • Orchid — They are the undisputed architects of turn-of-the-century fast-screamo blast beats and ideological chaos. Nuvolascura pulls their entire structural playbook from those sub-two-minute bursts of frantic speed. You hear it every time the tempo violently derails into pure dissonance.
  • Pg. 99 — The Sterling, Virginia collective turned chaotic screamo into an overwhelming wall of dual-vocal noise and sprawling misery. Nuvolascura takes that exact template of frantic, ugly heaviness and trims the fat down to razor wire. It's the same basement catharsis, just played at double speed.
  • Jeromes Dream — Their unhinged, throat-shredding micro-bursts set the standard for vocal extremity without studio cleanup. Shultz attacks the microphone with that identical, unvarnished ferocity where technique takes a backseat to total physical exhaustion. If you strip away the math-rock chords, that same raw panic is right there.
  • The Locust — San Diego's synth-grind weirdos proved that odd-meter aggression works best when delivered like a sudden power outage. Nuvolascura borrows heavily from their insectoid, twitchy guitar lines and abrupt stop-start transitions. It turns what could be standard emo violence into genuine disorientation.
  • Converge — Kurt Ballou built the modern blueprint for combining technical mathcore drumming with unhinged hardcore intensity. Nuvolascura relies on that precise, punishing rhythm section to keep their songs from completely falling apart during jagged tempo drops. That dirty low-end tension comes straight out of Salem.
